Condition as seen.   3 page in pencil letter headed Hd Qtr 2nd Corps April 1/65, My Dear Brother, on the 29th we moved from our Hd Qtrs inside the entrenched line and made our advance in the direction of the North Side RR.  The 5th Corps was moving on a parallel road to our left in the same direction and all the cavalry of the Army of the James, ___ and theat brought by Sheridan from the army of the Shenandoah was on the left of the 4th.  as fast as in great? our lines deployed they __ entrenched them when the connectious river? ___.  The Second Corps now holds a line running East and West  from Hatcher's Run to the Boydton Plank road running over the same ground we had the battle on the 2nd of October.  We have captured some prisoners and had several very brisk engagements.  During an artillery ___ Major Miller of the staff was killed instantly by a cannon shot striking him in the Bowels?  Porter Heaps horse was also killed from the same shot.  Porter had a painfully narrow escape.   Major Mills joined our staff from the 9th Corps he had been wounded at Antietam so during that he was a cripple he could scarcely ride.  By becoming to staff that he could neither get on or off.  It was very ___.  Sargent is wounded seriously but not dangerously it is thought in the thigh.  The loss's in the 2nd Corps have not been very serious.  The 5th Corps has gone today to help Sheridan.  I can't think of anything more at present.  Yours truly M D Stacy?
Wish I could pin down the name as this is important information about the actions just in front of the battle of Five Forks with Warren's 5th Corps supporting Sheridan's move around the enemy right at Petersburg that helped end the war.  Brief letter but with important conten.
