    Description

    Moses Noyes Arnold, an Abington, Massachusetts native rose from the ranks to Captain, G Company, 12th Massachusetts Volunteers, a notable unit that saw heavy fighting in the Battle of Antietam, 2nd Manassas & Gettysburg & the Wilderness. Arnold was seriously wounded in the Cornfield Fight at Antietam, but finished the war in active service. Postwar, Arnold was a GAR Post Commander and established the Veterans Memorial Monument at Abington. A skilled shoe maker before the War, postwar he established a successful shoemaking factory at Abington.  An original Civil War letter from Private Arnold at Fort Warren (Boston harbor) ""July 22nd", (1861)  to his parents- he is in good spirits, it looks like the regiment is going to go to War, we have been issued canteens, knives, forks, spoons and haversacks, Charley Jones visited last night, we "had a bully time",
    Mr Baldwin and his boys visited,  I sailed over to Hull (Mass), Captain Blanchard says I can carry my carpet bag, the wagons to carry us off have arrived in Boston today. The letter, like the others I have had from his estate  is signed "Moses". 1p 8 x 11" ink on blue lined paper. Edge wear, Overall VG. Comes w service info.
