Description
The 9th Iowa Volunteer Infantry was a hard fought veteran Eastern Iowa unit with lots of combat 18 year old Private Theodore Hyde enlisted from the village of Quasqueton, Buchanan County Iowa in 1861, surviving the Bloody battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas where the unit took very heavy losses and served 2 years more years until he was killed in action at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. An original Civil War Latter from Private Hyde to his parents, in camp "Near Helena, Sabbath day Oct 12, 1862, reports he has had a good Sabbath, enjoying the sermon of the Chaplain of the 34th Indiana, and despite steady firing around his camp of the cavalry who are discharging their guns, having just returned form a 2 day fight, is enjoying writing his parents, with the likenesses of his family lying beside him. In his letter he draws images of the different :"stripes", (chevrons & officers rank straps) "by which you can recognize the officers".3pp ink. 8 x 5". The letter is faded but legible with nice illus of the rank insignia with a key to their identity. Edge wear, age stains, fading, Overall Good. Comes w service info.
