CIVIL WAR SOUTH CAROLINA MOUNTAIN RAIDERS GOVERNOR LETTER

Description

The western portions of the Carolinas and East Tennessee were the scene of numerous acts of guerrilla warfare and resistance to the Confederacy. An  original Copy  letter perhaps from the archive of the Confederate South Carolina Governor & Confederate General Milledge Bonham  written in response to raids being carried out in the "mountain passes" ( and likely a  response to the raiders of Captain George W  Kirk, a Greene County Tennessee Unionist who  formed an effective Guerrilla Raider force of Confederate Deserters and Unionists, known as "Kirk's Raiders" incl many mountaineers and Cherokee Indians raiding Confederate outposts using the Blue Ridge passes from 1863 to the War's End. The letter was likely taken from the Confederate War office in Columbia when Sherman's Army took and burned the City . Bonham;'s efforts were not successful as Kirk succeeded in terrorizing the Carolinas rising to Colonel of the North Carolina Mounted Rifles (Armed with Spencer Rifles, they burned Camp Vance, North Carolina in 1864, and postwar led the mountaineers in the fight against the Ku Klux Klan. 1p 8 x 5" ink on greenish gray paper.
