Manuscript News Article - 4th of July 1843
Written for an un-determined newspaper, most likely Massachusetts, this 3 page manuscript from Fitchburg, Mass, was printed on Friday, July 14th, 1843.
The docket is dated 1844, and may be incorrect, for way would anybody write out the article if they already have the printed version.
It begins with “John Adams, in writing to his wife, on the day after the Declaration of Independence, remarked that the 4th of July “ought to be solemnized with pomp, shows, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other….”
The author goes on to commit on marked changes in the manner of how the day was celebrated in his time (1843).
I have photographed the whole article for you to read; most interesting to compare the views in 1843 as to what has become of our celebration today on this glorious date.
Fine condition.
